Recently, Sabrina stated she liked to do different types of songs and that ties into something I think most people recognize in Sabrina: versatility.
Sabrina can rock it out with the best or bring tears with such soulful expressions.
As a start in, take the "Proud Mary" video:
This was done right before the First Sabrina Earthquake (I'll explain that a little later). The camera work on this is excellent and it has to be noted that Sabrina's Dad has filmed most of Sabrina's videos.
If you watch and listen to this video you get a real sense of Sabrina's level of talent. Not only does she sing this song absolutely great, she puts the moves on stage like few can. I did not learn until much later that Sabrina is also a dancer and that raises some interesting points. You notice how confident Sabrina is on stage? Her two sisters, Sarah and Shannon, are also dancers and you can see the confidence in their moves, also. Someone might say Sabrina and her sisters are "sure-footed" -- which maybe says a lot for dancing lessons. Some NFL players take ballet -- not in preparation for a post-NFL career but because they claim it gives them more confidence on their feet. That makes sense to me. So all that dancing has prepared Sabrina for stage performances that simply and without question rock the rafters.
Sabrina plays the guitar in this video, too -- "versatility".
I was in the process of catching up on Sabrina's videos, sort of fell in love with "Mad World" -- then she did the collaboration "Beat It".
Beat It
I was blown away. "Proud Mary" was great but this went beyond great -- the word "pro" kept popping to mind.
Of course, all involved in this collaboration are talented but clearly Sabrina gave this video something extra. It would not have been nearly as good without her performance. Her rhythm and vocals are just beyond compare in this effort.
They didn't let me catch my breath ... no mercy from the Carpenter Production Team. They gave us "Black Velvet" and this was a seismic effort:
Black Velvet
Even now, months later, I am hypnotized by this video. I knew within a few seconds after the first play that we were witnessing something very special. I think critics in the future will agree "something happened" about this time -- Sabrina transitioned into a major talent that would promise to escape the confines of YouTube.
In no particular order, there came these two very famous Sabrina videos:
Sweet Child of Mine
(Stole it from Guns N Roses right out from under their noses)
You Raise Me Up
From driving rock to church choir ... that is the versatility for which Sabrina has become famous. Each one is beautifully done as a song but, even more, as a performance. In the days before video, these songs would've been enough but to be able to see Sabrina sing and perform these ... we are lucky people, aren't we?
Oh, yeah, First Sabrina Earthquake = "Black Velvet"
I'm divided on which type of song Sabrina does best. She captures the soul of songs like "Almost Lover"; just as easily, she captures the worldly sense of "I Know a Heartache When I See One" and with just the right touch of country.
Haven't heard "I Know a Heartache"? Sabrina hasn't done a video (that I know of) based on that song but you can hear her sing that song at her main website:
Sabrina Carpenter
If you haven't heard it yet you better scoot over and fix that or you will regret it all your days. Sabrina has the kind of talent that will blow Nashville completely away if she chooses.
In summary, Sabrina is one of the most talented and versatile artists of today. And only 11 years old. But let's be realistic. To me, talent trumps age and Sabrina has a level of talent --- and a versatility --- few can match.
